Can we turn Hyde Park into a food-producing area?
There are numerous small garden plots in the area which are currently lying unused (whilst at the same time there are long waiting lists for the nearby allotments). Turning these plots into food-growing areas can help give local residents access to free healthy food, build community spirit and mutual aid in the neighbourhood, and improve the appearance of an area with a mix of local families and a transient student population living in frequently neglected properties.
Currently, there are nine areas which are wholly or partly cultivated, three which are in the process of being prepared for planting, and several more where the residents have expressed interest in having their gardens cultivated for food. With more volunteers, there would be the capacity to do more work in the student gardens as well as gardens belonging to local residents. As well as labour for the gardens, we need help with publicity and fundraising; the idea is to make this a project which anyone can do in their own areas with a minimum of organisation, using face-to-face networks as well as formal publicity.
People can participate in a number of ways: if you preferred, you could take responsibility for one or more plots, by individual arrangement with the householder, deciding with them what to grow and how to share the produce between yourself and the householder(s) (as in a conventional garden-share scheme). Or you could come on an occasional or regular basis to help with whatever needs doing.
Regular work sessions are every first and third Sunday of the month, from 2pm onwards, and every first and third Thursday of the month from 4pm onwards. Meet at 50 Kings Road, LS6 1NU - just up the hill from the Royal Park pub, and close to the famous Royal Park school. At any other time, you can come by arrangement with me - at the moment work is going on most days. Once you've been introduced, you could come at times which suit your own schedule.
